Two Girls and a Busted Radiator Hose
I got pinged to arrive at a gas station in western Lake Worth. I find two girls next to a small, inexpensive white car. They hug, one gets in my car for a long ride South. I quickly learn the other girl's car had broken down twice that night and she had just bought it the day before from an acquaintance. They had been highly distraught about the girl's car, obviously.
At a stop light, she asks if I know about cars and I answer, "yes." She then shows me a video on her phone of the problem her friend was having. After hearing about the issue and seeing the video, it was just a busted radiator hose. They had been convinced the car needed to be "trashed."
I told the girl, "Look, the auto parts store up the street here just opened, we can end the ride and get what she needs and fix it in about 5 minutes." You would have thought I had offered to buy her friend a new car.
"What? Are you serious????" She was ecstatic and called her friend immediately to not move the car. We go in the auto parts store, she buys the $17 hose with clamps. I happen to have a screwdriver, so no worries there. We drive back to the car. I forgot to get some more coolant, but I figured her friend can get some at the gas station she's at.
We get there, ten minutes later, the new hose is on, the old hose looked more like it had been sliced than busted, but whatever. After putting in more coolant and adding some water, the car seemed to run well. We waited a little while longer to make sure it didn't blow or hopefully she hadn't run it too hot earlier to blow the head gasket. All appeared well.
They are both in tears thanking me. They offered money, but I said, "No." Though I still needed to get the one girl back home.
She gets in my car, pings me (requests a Lyft) since she is in my car, I get the ride obviously because I am the closest Lyft driver. She is still dazed and confused the car, which had been such a drag on their mood since 3 a.m. had been resolved.
We had a great drive to her home where we both laughed hysterically. Lots of fun! It was a nice 25-mile ride and she gave me a large tip on the app.
